It's the most wonderful time of the year in Japan, probably even better than Christmas... Sakura Cherry Blossom time!!

I snapped a few photos (some more blurry than others) trying to capture how magical it is to be in Kyoto during the Sakura season. An important point to note for Sakura viewing in Japan, it varies throughout the country due to the various temperatures!

For Kyoto the best time to view the Sakura is around late March until early April.

A pic I snapped while biking on the Kamo river. These girls had their Kimono Sakura photo taking down.

Kamo River (鴨川)

During my stay in Kyoto this would easily become my favorite route to bike going up and down the Kamo River.

I highlighted with a red marker to indicate where the river is located in Kyoto. It runs slightly to the east of the center of Kyoto (that being the Kyoto Imperial Palace of course). You can walk it, run it, bike it, relax at it, bbq at it, play in the river at it, catch a few sea critters at it, you can do a lot at this river is what I'm trying to say.

I'll have more videos showing the river at various points and write about it more as well, but here is my introduction to you of the Kamo River!

When I first got into Kyoto I immediately headed to this river not really knowing what to expect, but having a sense that it would be worthwhile to bike along... I was right. It's a spectacular biking route! It's not paved along the edge of the river, but this dirt path gives you a real sense of how people used to walk along the river.

Sakura bloom all along the river at various points.

Kamogawa Delta (鴨川デルタ)

The Kamogawa Delta is the point where the Kamo River branches in different directions. You can continue biking or walking along either branch. Choose your fate wisely muwahaha. These stone crossing paths are really common along the Kamo River, and many people use them throughout the day! The river doesn't run very fast at all, and is only a foot deep around these stepping stone paths.

Around Kyoto you can find so many rivers running especially through the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. I spotted this bird called a Shirasagi while exploring around (it's also called an Egret in English). They are really common in these neighborhood rivers.

Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所)

I biked a little bit around Kyoto Imperial Palace as well, where the top man of Japan himself lives; I mean the Emperor by that, the man who has been divinely chosen by the gods to be the ruler of Japan. You can even bike along the gravel roads around his palace which is vey convenient, but not advisable if you don't have the right kind of wheels. Many people commute through the palace grounds going to school, work, and visiting friends or relatives. You can enter an inner part of the palace for an admission price, but just enjoying the outside part of the palace is completely free.

Weeping Cherry Blossoms at the Site of the Kinjo Residence (近衞邸跡の枝垂れ桜)

This was a cool little secluded garden I found in the Northern part of the palace. It's a nice area to leisurely walk around in and enjoy many different Sakura.

The picture above is a small side street I found in the Higashiyama area with a two rows of lovely Sakura trees. The street is located next to the Cacao Market by Mariebelle Kyoto.
